National Identification Authority (NIDA), established by the National Identification Authority Instrument, 2008. It has the mandate to register and issue identity cards to Tanzanian citizens and eligible residents over 18 years of age, in accordance to the Registration and Identification Act (Act No.11, 1986, Revised Edition 2012).
NIDA began issuing identity cards to eligible residents in Dar es Salaam since September 2016. The exercise has now been extended to all eligible residents nationwide.
NIDA wishes to inform all Legal Resident who have been in Tanzania for over six months, as per their residence permits as of the date of this announcement, to register and identify persons as required by law.
Every eligible resident, who is not a citizen but is at least 18 years old and is a member of the qualified legal residents group, must apply for registration at the nearest NIDA Office. This is NIDA District Office in every district in Tanzania Mainland. Any person who violates or fails to comply with any provision of the law is guilty of an offense.
The prescribed fee is payable depending on the type of legal resident applying for registration or issuance of Identity Cards to qualified legal residents.
What is a national ID card?
A national identification card is a document that can be used to verify identity. It is typically a card made of plastic with digitally embedded information.

Method 1: Use USSD via Mobile Phones using Vodacom SIM Cards or Airtel SIM Cards
You can obtain a National ID Number through interactive USSD if you have a Vodacom SIM card or an Airtel SIM Card on your mobile phone. These are the steps:
- Call *152*00#
- Choose 3
- Then select 2
- Enter your full name (First-, middle- and surnames eg. Dan John Sele
- Enter your mobile number, the one you used to register for National ID.
- Accept the charges
If your records are fully captured, you will receive a SMS containing your National ID Number. If your records are not fully captured, you will receive a SMS.
Method 2: Use NIDA’s website
You can access the internet to obtain your National ID number if you have it. This method is my favorite because you can also print a copy your National ID card. For more information, see how to print a copy the National ID card from NIDA Tanzania.
- Navigate to http://nida.go.tz
- Link to Point to National Identity
- Click here to get your National ID Number
- Enter your surname and first name
- Choose your birth date
- Enter your first and last names.
Your National ID Number will be presented to the browser when it interacts with NIDA’s database. You might make a small error and be asked to correct it.
This portal allows you to retrieve information from the National ID Database. The intended users are
- NIDA stakeholders
- Owner of a national ID card
This portal is used by the user to set a PIN CODE. The code will be used to reveal his or her personal information as needed.
You must correctly fill in the required information to get the data you require from the system.
Method 3: Visit NIDA regional offices
This is the least popular method to get your National ID Number (NID) from NIDA. If you have already tried the first method and failed to get your National ID Number, then this is the third option. They will need to go to a nearby NIDA regional office in order for them provide their details.
NIDA staff will retrieve the National ID Number from NIDA’s database. If your information is not in NIDA’s database, they will recommend that you fill out a registration form and undergo the biometric scanning process.
