How much should you make in the Netherlands? Learn how to get arrears and find out what the minimum wage is in the Netherlands.

The Dutch labor code sets the minimum wage in the Netherlands. It is reviewed twice per year, on 1 January and 1 Jul.

Based on a full work week, the wage can vary from 36 to 40 hours per week depending on the working arrangement. A monthly minimum wage is established and daily rates serve as an indication.

The Netherlands does not have a net minimum wage. Employers pay different social insurance contributions and taxes to each employee. A salary cap is in place for public sector workers, which limits a wage above EUR181,000 per annum.

The 2019 minimum wage in the Netherlands

The Netherlands saw an increase in wages starting January 2019. Workers aged 22 and over are entitled to minimum EUR1,615.80 per lună. This is a EUR37.80 rise from the EUR1,578 last year.

Eurostat data shows that the Dutch minimum wage ranks third in the EU. Only Luxembourg (EUR2,071) or Ireland (EUR1,656) have higher minimum wages.

Everybody who works in the Netherlands between 15 and the state pension age is entitled to at the least the minimum wage for their age bracket and a holiday allowance.

Your employer must also pay the Dutch minimum wage at each birthday. The Dutch minimum wage is also available to flexible workers, including those who work from home or are on call. Contract workers also have the right to the Dutch minimum wages.

 

How to avoid being underpaid if your earnings are below the Dutch minimum wage

You can take action up until five years after your underpayment if you receive less that the minimum wage in The Netherlands.

You should have information on your payslip, including your basic pay rate and any other commissions. Also, the Dutch minimum wage for your age and the holiday allowance for your birthday. This will allow you to compare the figures.

Your employer should be consulted if you feel you are being paid too low. Your employer might be eligible to apply for the Employee Insurance Agency (UWV), to allow you to receive less than the minimum wage in the Netherlands. This should be confirmed.

If your appeal is unsuccessful, you may then file a case with the Inspectorate SZW (anonymously if necessary). It is best to first consult a union or legal adviser, legal assistance center, or social counselor.

If the employer’s payroll records reveal discrepancies in underpayment, fines up to EUR12,000 may be imposed. You must pay your wages in arrears within four weeks. Otherwise, the Inspectorate SZW may impose a fine up to EUR40,000 on your employer.

The minimum wage for expat workers in the Netherlands is €25

The minimum wage in the Netherlands for foreign workers who have a Dutch work permit, is the same as that for workers over 22 years old. Even if an employee is less than 22 years of age and works part-time, this is true.

Only if the employer pays at least the minimum wage in Holland, can a foreign worker be granted a Dutch Work Permit.

Minimum wage in Amsterdam

According to UBS Prices and Earnings Report (2018), Amsterdam’s wages ranked 22 and worldwide. Pay Inc. estimates that the Amsterdam median salary was just below EUR40,000 in 2018.

Robert Walters conducted a 2018 salary survey and found that only 3% of Dutch professionals saw a rise in their pay in 2017. While 45% of respondents expected an increase of at least 3 percent in 2018, the survey revealed that at least 5% of them had seen a rise in their earnings.

The number of available jobs in Amsterdam increased by 10% in 2017. This was significantly lower than the 24% in Eindhoven, and 22% in Rotterdam.

Salaries in the Netherlands

The Dutch college and university guide Keuze Studiegids analyzed which degrees are most commonly associated with the highest salaries in the Netherlands.

According to some reports, dentistry is the most lucrative subject in the Netherlands. The least likely to find employment with a decent wage were graduates of international law, cultural studies, cultural and cultural anthropology, and environmental sciences.

The report showed that 15% of art and cultural graduates earned less than EUR900 per month, while many international law students started in NGOs with low wages.
